In A General History of the Pyrates Captain Johnson claims a flag depicting a skeleton and a man with a flaming sword defying death was found by the crew of HMS Swallow when they captured Robert’s ship. ‘… had a Figure of a Skeleton in it and a Man pourtrayed [sic] with a flaming Sword in his Hand, intimating a defiance of Death itself.’
