Philip Lyne was an exceptionally cruel pirate active in 1725. He was Francis Spriggs quartermaster until eventually getting his own vessel, the Sea Nymph. At his trial he claimed to have killed the masters of 37 vessels. He was executed in 1726. A witness saw Lyne and his men with their flag at their trial: “… their Black Flagg before them, with the Representation of a Man in full proportion, with a Cutlass in one Hand and a Pistol in the other, Extended.” Boston Gazette, 28/3/1726.
